Bonjour! Hola! Guten Tag! Buenos Dias!

Somerset Primary Languages

WELCOME TO SOMERSET PRIMARY LANGUAGES!

The aim of this site is to provide information, resources, news in a user-friendly manner to support and enhance the MFL teaching and learning that we have.  Most of the resources and activities are the result of work I have been engaged in during recent years.  Where work is the product of someone else - either from within Somerset or from elsewhere, I have acknowledged this.  I hope that anyone from another LA who finds anything useful on this site will in turn be kind enough to do the same.......we are very keen to share - re-inventing the wheel is not necessary!

On this site.....

You will find some ready to use resources.....if you use something it would be wonderful to hear HOW you have used it!  E-mail me and tell me!  Equally, if you have produced a resource that could be shared by others, then PLEASE e-mail me a copy and I will add it to this site.  Let's generate a collection of resources TOGETHER.

If your appetite has been whetted by anything you find here, then please contact me - e-mail is the best!

Equally, if there is a way in which we can help you that we have not yet thought of, then please let me know that too.

The audit of current foreign language provision undertaken Spring Term 2006 has produced some very encouraging figures!  60% of Somerset Primary /First Schools are doing some MFL during curriculum time.  The main language being offered is French, with a small number offering Spanish and a smaller number still offering German.  Italian appears in just 1 school as yet!

The overall figure is in line with national statistics.  This is amazing news and demonstrates that Somerset has moved a long way in the past three years.

There is now a plethora of ways in which we are seeking to support Primary MFL teaching and learning.  There is at least one training opportunity each month - and more than that in the Spring Term 2007!...a half termly "Update" to keep you abreast of the MFL news relating to our county: CPD accreditation opportunities with Bath Spa University - the first 10 workshop sessions are underway and this will be repeated next year;  Training and resources - all FREE to those attending the sessions;   Funding for specific MFL projects has been granted to a number of clusters/groups of schools working together; supply cover to allow cross-phase liason meetings;  Team of Leading Teachers - primary practitioners themselves, with experience and expertise in teaching primary MFL who you are welcome to go and observe; Opportunity for a short series of "model" language lessons in a group of schools wishing to embark on this exciting journey but unsure as to the "shape" of a primay MFL lesson
