Bonjour! Hola! Guten Tag! Buenos Dias!

Key Stage 2 Framework

"A climbing frame - not a cage!"

The Key Stage 2 Framework has been developed out of the Literacy Strategy and the document "Excellence and Enjoyment" which have played a key part in the re-shaping of Primary Schools in recent years.  Thus it has a very "primary" feel to it.

There are 3 main strands to the Framework: Oracy, Literacy and Intercultural Understanding.

There are also 2 cross cutting strands of Knowledge about Language and Language Learning Strategies.

The Framework is not prescriptive regarding content, but promotes skills-based language learning.

The aim of the National Languages Strategy is to provide an entitlement to learn a foreign language during curriculum time, for all Key Stage 2 learners.  The intention is for that early language learning experience to be a positive and rich one, sensitizing the children to language learning and promoting an interest and love of languages from the primary phase onwards.  The skills promoted are intended to enable the children to become independent language learners later on in their school lives.

The attached documents formed the basis of sessions delivered as part of the Bath Spa "Teaching MFL to Primary Children" Course.
